We have an internal quality system with a focus on continuous improvements to meet the challenges of the consulting world. The choice available to me was either a freelance clinical auditor, or an auditor within the QA department of a large CRO. I found that the number of freelance auditors with the necessary skills and capability was limited. Those that were suitably experienced were usually booked-up for 6 months and would not be able to help me with my immediate (usually urgently) need. The large CROs could provide highly skilled individuals at short notice, but there were conflict of interest issues. Most CROs are unhappy (understandably) to be audited by a competitor CRO.
