Basement Martial Arts is a full time professional centre in Stevenage, Hertfordshire catering for the complete beginner looking to gain fitness, weight control, self confidence and learn practical self defence all the way to the competitive athlete looking to take their training to the next level.

In 1914 Mitsuo Maeda, a Japanese Judo and Jiu-Jitsu master came to Brazil. In return for help from the Brazilian politician Gastao Gracie, Maeda taught Judo and Jiu-Jitsu to Gastao's son Carlos, who in turn taught the art to his brothers. Helio Gracie, the youngest of the brothers was unable to train according to doctor's recommendations, as he was naturally weak and frail.
