Bexley Sand & Ballast

In 1962, the farm was bought by two brothers, Eric and Clive Wells. They quarried the land for ballast and set up a ballast works beside the A2, which is still in situ… In 1994, the Chapman family bought the site from the brothers, as they wanted to retire; and now, three generations of Chapmans work in the business. Since this time, the company has expanded from a sand and ballast works, in to a builders merchants, specialising in Indian Sandstone slabs and block paving, as well as rockery stones and different aggregates. During this transformation, the works has kept some of the nostalgic charm of the old farm. Many people have come down in their wellies and gloves and sorted their own rockery stones or granite setts from the pile! Despite our sign-written lorries, so many people have told us that they have lived in Bexley all of their lives, and did not know that we existed. So, hopefully, the signs which have started to appear around the village will help to indicate to everyone that, yes, we are down that tiny road, by the old church! In fact, it is a product of the constant comments from different customers that they were unaware of our existence, that we have come up with the slogan — ‘Bexley’s Biggest Secret’ — because it would seem that this small road beside the old church, leads to a 65 acre farm, housing a thriving, friendly, family business!
