It was established in Bury in 1905 by businessman Mr James Ditchfield Lepp who later became the Mayor of Bury for 1928-1929. The business was formally incorporated as Lepps Ltd. in 1935. Today the company is still family-run and in the ownership of Mr Lepp's son John and his wife Antonia. Lepps Ltd currently have three jewellery stores in Altrincham, Bury and Warrington.

The business celebrated it's one hundredth anniversary in 2005 with a series of prize draws and other promotions. Lepps have sponsored the bicycle hill-climb "The Rake" which once attracted cycling stars such as Graeme Obree, Stuart Dangerfield, and Olympic Champion Chris Boardman. Lepps have also been involved in RAC British sports car racing in the 1960's and 1970's. Lepps Jewellers pride themselves on selling bespoke second-hand jewellery and prestigeous watch brands such as Rolex, Breitling, Omega, etc. They also buy watches, jewellery, and scrap gold.
