Very fine single-use needles are used. They can be inserted for only a few seconds, or they may be left in place for 20 minutes or longer. As well as helping the main condition many patients find that there are "side effects" of improved energy, better sleep and an overall sense of well-being. Cupping therapy and moxibustion (using smouldering herbs to warm the body) may also be used as part of acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture is very safe when carried out by a properly trained practitioner. The needles used are single-use, sterile and disposable.
